GAMEBOY YOUR SELF TUTORIAL

How to Make Your Own Gameboy Portrait

I jacked the idea from Bamboota's Facebook profile photo!

Here's the simple, cheap way to do it.

1. Download THIS Photoshop 4 color index file.

2. Paste a photo of your face or whatever into it and hope that the contrast in your photo is good enough to get a decent result. (best if your image is 160 x 144 pixels like the original Gameboy resolution)

3. Download THIS Photoshop Gameboy file.

4. Paste your indexed photo into the layer called "PASTE UR MUG HERE"

VIOLA!

TIPS:

NOVICE: If your pasted image looks like crap, use levels, burn/dodge, etc to adjust a grayscale version of your image and try, try, try pasting again. It's not an exact science since it's difficult to predict how Photoshop is calculating the reduction/color matching.

DIFFICULT: If you want to manually reduce your image, you can download/use THIS SWATCH and play with the diffusion percentage to tinker with the resulting patterns. If you feel like learning, you can try to grind through my outdated but mostly applicable old Index Separation Tutorial.

BOOM!

Roadtrip 2011 Epiphanies

I went on a roadtrip from Hoover, Alabama to San Diego, California and back.  I visited friends, surfed for the first time, drove a Lamborghini, walked Vegas' Fremont Street, saw Hoover dam and a bunch of other beautiful, wonderful things. It was good. Here are the epiphanies I had over the 18 days.

Visit Friends. They Like You.

Hugs are Good.

Everyone is Lonely. Love Them.

Do Things You Are Scared Of, It Will Be Good.

Experiences and People, Not Things.

Surrender Your Control. Just Go.

You Are Not A Horrible Person.

The World is Way Too Big for Your Petty Shit to Really Be All that Big of a Deal. Get Over the Little Stuff.

Experiences are Useless Unless You Have Someone to Share Them With.

On the trip, I obsessively listened to Bon Iver's version of Come Talk to Me a hundred times, and the lyrics spoke to me: "Whatever Fear Invents, I Swear It Makes No Sense."

ROADTRIP 2011 – Placeholder

Starting to head back east with one last stop in the Utah canyonlands area. I've visited most everyone now, so it will be a lonely road.  I suppose I'm somewhat excited to get back, to work and art, although once I get home I'll have to make a decision to stay, move, or take off on the road again. Chicago or  Key West seems interesting. I might as well exercise my freedom while I have alot of it.

Placeholder.

I have alot of photos. Unfortunately, internet connections don't really let me upload them efficiently. Maybe once I get back.

Day 12 Diego to Vegas - Fremont Street

Day 13 Vegas - Exotic Cars & Hoover Dam

Day 14 Vegas to Flagstaff - Lake Mead, US 98 South, Pinball Hall of Fame

Day 15 Flagstaff to Page - Wahweap, Paria, Horseshoe Bend

Day 16 Page to Santa Rosa

Day 17-18 Bum Rush from Santa Rosa, NM to Hoover, AL

ROADTRIP 2011: Day 11 – San Diego & Other

I spent the day at Mission Beach. It was an overcast, rainy day in San Diego so there was hardly anyone at the beach, or the nearby Coney Island like Belmont Park.  San Diego reminds me of the cluster planned cities in Irvine, but just a little older with worn roads, and older homes. It's quaint. I can see why people would love it here. There were alot of trailers/campers around. I imagine they must be the homes of transient surf bums.

I've seen most of the people I can, so I start heading back east tomorrow.  My route back to Alabama is undetermined, although I have a vague notion of a few stops I'd like to make before I bum rush for home.

.....

Steve Jobs died today. It's always odd when a prominent figure in the media dies. Even if we didn't know them, the loss is almost as palpable as a death in the our immediate social circle.

This is a commencement address he gave in 2005 regarding how to live before you die.

ROADTRIP 2011: Day 8-10 Laguna Beach, San Diego

I surfed for the first time with Jason and Matt.

Hung out with Marissa, TomG, and ChrisF at Teefury Headquarters.

Saw my asian brothas Philip and Alvin.

I feel like moving back to California.

I haven't been using my camera much so this is all I have of the last couple days.

(I have a shiny forehead. Dang this oily skin.)
